Question for everyone: if Mastodon is the federated <birdsite>, and Frendica is the federated Facebook

Is there any reason, as someone with resources for #SelfHostingEverything, to not run both?

I understand the whole point of the fediverse is decentralization, however I think more than enough Mastodon and alike instances already exist. There's two sides of a coin here: The experience for yourself, and the experience for others.

  • For general posting ("Tweet" style), I don't understand why you would need more that one general instance. Would you post to one more than the other, or both simultaneously? Which one should people follow?
  • As outlined in this article, you could unintentionally invite yourself to get DDoS'ed by other instances.
